Young@Heart
An extraordinary documentary about a unique chorus made up of 80-plus year-olds proves the magic and power of music is ageless. Based in New England, the chorus’s founder/director Bob Cilman expertly arranges a wide — and unexpected — variety of songs (from Sonic Youth and Talking Heads to James Brown and Alan Toussaint) for a spirited, talented, and wonderful group of octogenarians. A brilliant film that will make you laugh, cry — and applaud! Cilman will introduce and take questions about the film. A special treat will be a performance by chorus member John Rinehart, a Raleigh County, WV native, and one of 17 children. He has been with the group since 2009 and turns 89 this year.
March 2 — WV Music Hall of Fame, Charleston, 2 pm. Pay what you can.

The Devil and Daniel Johnston
Award-winning documentary on Daniel Johnston, the outsider songwriter and artist who grew up in northern West Virginia. In the ’90s his music was recorded and championed by the likes of Nirvana, Beck, Jeff Tweedy, Sonic Youth, and Tom Waits. Beneath Johnston’s sucess is the story of an artist battling bipolar disorder, who spent the last three decades of his life in and out of institutions including a stretch at the West Virginia state mental hospital in Weston. The film’s LA-based director, Jeff Feuerzeig, will introduce the film and hold a Q&A following the screening. The film won the Documentary Directing Award at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival.
March 28 — The Lewis Theater, Lewisburg, 7 pm. $15.
March 29 — WV Music Hall of Fame, Charleston, 6 pm. Pay what you can.
