Strangest Dream by Alan Freeman & Robert Shafer$15.99 plus $2.00 shipping

WVMHoF releases Strangest Dream – first Alan Freeman & Robert Shafer collaboration!

The West Virginia Hall of Fame is proud to release the first recorded collaboration by two of West Virginia’s most accomplished musicians.

Dulcimer master Alan Freeman and guitar virtuoso Robert Shafer have known each other for decades – and have often played together at fairs, festivals and gatherings across the state.

“Alan and I have wanted to record together for a very long time,” Shafer said. “I feel this recording is a great snapshot of the music we’ve made over those years and I feel honored that the Hall of Fame chose to release it."

Both players have a tremendous amount of respect for each other and jumped at the opportunity to record.

“When someone like Robert Shafer wants to record with me all I can do is be humble and grateful,” said Freeman. “This is the music Robert and I have been playing together for the last 35 years or so and I’m happy to get it down one time.”

The tunes run the gamut from jaunty opener, “Toad in the Jelly Jar” and the melodic folk of “Elk River Blues” and “Twisted Laurel” to the lilting “The Waltz You Saved For Me” and the Freeman original “Out of the Cold.” One of the songs, “Just Because,” has an interesting West Virginia connection – the song which has been performed in many styles – was the first million-selling polka record for none other than WV native Frankie Yankovic. The native of Tucker County was inducted into the WVMHoF in 2008.

Strangest Dream, the third release on the WVMHoF label, features Freeman and Shafer’s dextrous musicianship as well as guest spots from longtime friend, singer Karen McKay. Other guests Bob Shank (banjo, vocals), John Thornton (bass), Sophie Cash (fiddle, accordion) and Ben Townsend (fiddle).
